Join JASA Friends for the Kayoubikai (火曜日会) held every month!

It's a great chance to socialize and practice Japanese with the lively JASA community. Everyone is welcome, regardless of membership.

Please RSVP at least three days in advance. The event is free, but participants are responsible for their meal costs afterward.

Welcome to the JASA Japanese Language Club held once a month on Thursdays, starting at 6:30 PM at Vestavia Hills Library in the Forest.

We encourage you to study the Hiragana, Katakana, and grammar section on your own at home. During our sessions, we'll focus on answering questions you have and/or practice conversational Japanese together!

Feel free to ask questions, share resources, and connect with fellow learners in this group. We're excited to study with you!

Open to both members and non-members, this event offers a chance to enjoy Japanese cuisine, meet new people, and connect with the community. Attendance is free, but participants will cover their own meal costs.

Together with Table for Two, a network of Japan-America Societies, and the US JET Alumni Association, we JASA are excited to host Sept Ouchigohan - virtual Japanese cooking class.

The theme for this month will be "Otsukimi - お月見" where we’ll be making :

- Otsukimi Meatballs

- Okura Pickles

- Mitarashi Dango

JASA members, or members of other Japan-America/Japan Societies receive a $5 registration discount.

お月見 (Otsukimi), literally meaning “moon viewing,” is a celebration that honors the autumn harvest moon, historically believed to be the most beautiful of the year.

Traditionally held on the 15th night of the eighth month of the old Japanese lunar calendar, otsukimi now falls on a varying date in September or October according to the modern calendar.

In Japanese folklore, a rabbit lives on the moon, endlessly pounding rice into soft, chewy mochi with a wooden mallet. This image—rather than the “man in the moon”—has shaped the way generations of children and adults imagine the night sky. The rabbit and mochi connection also influences the treats eaten during otsukimi: tsukimi dango, small white rice dumplings stacked in a pyramid, are offered to the moon to pray for a good harvest and prosperity.

This class will be taught by Debra Samuels, lead curriculum and recipe developer for Wa-Shokuiku, a program of TABLE FOR TWO USA. Debra is an author of two cookbooks and co-author of Japanese Cooking for Kids, TFT’s new cookbook and the 2020 recipient of the John E. Thayer III Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cultural Exchange Between the United States and Japan.

JASA CELEBRATION DINNER・年次祝辞ディナー

Each year, the Japan-America Society of Alabama (JASA) hosts a special dinner to celebrate and network with our members and guests. This year’s dinner will feature keynote speaker Nicole Pelfry, Manager of the Payload and Mission Operations Division at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. We'll recognize new and expanding Japanese companies making a significant impact in Alabama and present the 2026 Samuel Ullman Award to an individual dedicated to strengthening the Japan-Alabama relationship.

毎年、アラバマ日米協会はアラバマ州全域から会員やゲストが集まり、交流、食事、そして祝賀を楽しむためのレセプション兼募金活動イベント「年次祝賀ディナー」を開催しています。今年のディナーでは、NASAのペイロード・ミッション運用部門マネージャーであるニコール・ペルフレイ氏をゲストスピーカーとしてお招きし、「日米航空宇宙関係」についてお話しいただきます。また、州内の新規および事業拡大の日本企業を紹介し、当協会の使命や目標について解説を行い、サミュエル・ウルマン賞の受賞者を称えます。

The following morning, our Business Forum will offer valuable insights from guest speakers and opportunities to engage with industry leaders. This year’s topic is “The Aerospace/Defense Integrated Network in North Alabama,” featuring speakers Burke Hare, Site Director for Space Development Agency-South, Space Development Agency (SDA); Dr. Daigo Kobayashi, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Alabama; Johnathan Pettus, Executive Director of the Auburn University Applied Research Institute; and a representative from the Huntsville/Madison Chamber of Commerce.

また、年次祝賀ディナーの翌朝にビジネスフォーラムを開催し、参加者の皆様に有益なビジネス上の知見や最新情報をお届けします。今年のテーマは「北アラバマにおける航空宇宙・防衛統合ネットワーク」で、講演者として、宇宙開発庁（SDA）南部支局長のバーク・ヘア氏、アラバマ大学航空宇宙工学・力学助教授の小林大吾博士、オーバーン大学応用研究所所長のジョナサン・ペタス氏、そしてハンツビル／マディソン商工会議所の代表者をお迎えする予定です。
